In Johannesburg, marchers will gather in a number of locations from as early as 06h30, including Mary Fitzgerald Square; corner of William Nicol Drive and Sandton Drive; corner of Grayston Drive and Rivonia Road; and corner of Beyers Naude and Preller Street.

Travellers are advised to find alternative ways of getting to or from the airport.

Henning Snyman of International SOS said the march was expected to be peaceful. “International SOS is not expecting any violence from the parties participating in the march but there has been a threat from the ANC Youth League advising participants of their plans to disrupt the demonstration, which is International SOS’s main concern.”

Snyman said the concern for business travellers coming to Johannesburg related to the traffic they would encounter. “Between OR Tambo and Sandton, business travellers may encounter marches and blocked roads; 80% of all business travellers arriving in Johannesburg are going to Sandton. Travellers should expect massive delays in their travel.”

Most public transport services are closed today but the Gautrain will run to and from OR Tambo as per its usual schedule.

Gautrain told TAM its buses would either take detours or suspend services as the marches were blocking off usual routes to the stations. It also warned that people would be flocking to the stations due to lack of other transport services, so there will be major chaos.

Corporates around the country have offered staff the opportunity to take leave to ensure they are not in any traffic or, if the march does turn violent, to avoid the situation. Howard Stephens, GBTA chairperson said: “Many corporates have provided employees with the opportunity to take a leave day and join the march as it is their democratic right. But we would also like them to take care as there is potential for the march to turn violent.”

He said those travelling to or from work should be vigilant as if they were to be injured, the company would not be held liable as it would be staff’s choice if they took the day off.
